Mr. Kamal Nissanka, Secretary General of the Liberal Party, issuing a statement states that The Liberal Party warmly congratulates the 65th anniversary celebrations of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) under the leadership of President Mr. Maithripala Sirisena.

SLFP was formed by the commitment of two exceptional intellectuals Mr. S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike  who was a minister under Mr D.S.Senanayake  government and Mr. Sri Nissanka KC In 1951 who by that time was the Member of Parliament for Kurunegala.  Mr Bandraranaike was able to rally round various anti colonial patriotic political forces to form a  broad political front with no contest agreements with some left political parties  and secure a magnificent victory at the 1956 general election.

Mr  S.W.R.D.Banadaranaike has  thus laid the historical foundation  for two party system in Sri Lanka. In 1960 July SLFP won the power under Ms Sirimavo Bandaranaike and continued the policies of 1956 and implemented them to great extent. The 1970 electoral victory paved the way for a    Republic and Sri Lanka completely deviated from British colonial influence.

All governments had to face separatist politics that was orientated from Wadukoddai Conference in 1976 and continued till 2009.  In 1994 SLFP was able to form a government under Ms Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse won the Presidential election  in 2005 and was able to defeat the separatist forces by 2009 but however  some  policies continued thereafter were not conducive to  democracy and a group of the SLFP opposed them silently and in 2015 Mr. Maitripala Sirisena as general secretary of the SLFP contested the presidential election with the support of the many political parties and civil society groups.

SLFP under President Maitripala Sirisena has re-established our relations with many friendly countries and now there are positive signs regarding creating democratic norms and implementation of rule of law. Relations among our own communities are better and reconciliation although difficult is taking place.

In the circumstances the Liberal Party sends its warm sentiments to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party at its 65th anniversary celebrations and wish it could fulfill the aspirations of the common man of the island.

Kamal Nissanka
