Liberal Party Statement on the Victory of the 2020 Parliamentary Election
Need of “Consensus Democracy”
Mr Kamal Nissanka, Secretary General of the Liberal Party(Sri Lanka) issuing a statement ,congratulates leadership of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on its massive victory at the 2020 Parliamentary Elections. As the party secured 145 seats in the new parliament it could easily form a government of 2/3 rd majority in collaboration with friendly political parties such as Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
SLPP is a an alliance of number of political parties and It is noteworthy that both SLPP and SLFP were able to settle their political differences before the election and this unity has contributed immensely to the massive victory.
Liberal Party understands that the SLPP is an alliance composed of number of progressive political parties and therefore it should take main decisions on the burning issues in a consultative manner using the principles of consensus democracy.
Liberal Party believes that country is in the threshold of a new constitution with an electoral system and therefore a proper consultative process should be launched.
As the country is in high level economic crisis due to Covid 19 epidemic and other reasons new government should short and long term measures to overcome the burdens people suffering.
Liberal Party believes that the new government would properly handle the external relations with major global and regional powers as to bring assistance to resolve some burning issues’ facings the country.
